When I was in graduate school, writing my dissertation was the “fun” part.
Most scientists laugh at this, because for them the experience of writing their dissertation was like pulling teeth.
This was a major epiphany moment for me—I enjoyed the communication aspect of science, while many researchers often struggle with this component.
Many researchers don’t write effectively about their science because they weren’t taught the skills to do so or they just plain don’t like to do it.
I get it—writing is not easy! But it’s really important.
You can have excellent scientific data and ideas, but if no one understands what you did, why it’s important, and what it means, then what is the value?
I’ve spent more than a decade helping scientists edit their manuscripts, grants, and other professional documents, so I fully realize the value of good communication through clear scientific writing.
Simply put, strong and effective scientific communication directly contributes to scientific success.
